I am a long time Dan Fan, but I can't agree with your analysis. I am a black woman with possible Jewish roots. When I hear Fagan's version, I hear the ambivalence a white man may have after a "walk on the wild side." It is the same theme Fegan's recent work except instead of a nubile young white woman he substitutes a black woman who is chic enough for white aging, hipster circles until she slugs down a belt or two. That seems to fit the sterotypes of black woman much more than a denizen of the Polish ghetto. Ashkenazis in America have made it out of the ghetto, but a black woman, no matter how gentrified she may be never does.

The ENTIRE LeeVees "Hanukkah Rocks" album is fantastic. Elements of The Ramones, The Kinks, Xmas song kitsch-y sound, classic Ska, and I could go on. It is high-q music with wicked smart lyrics that will entertain and warm the hearts of kids and grown-ups alike. Plus, they are GREAT in concert. So glad you featured them here. Happy JHanukkah (you have to listen to the album to understand what that (silent) 'J' is doing there- and you'll thank me for it...you're most welcome)!!

(Sorry, cut myself off) Dylan recognizes the damage he caused by pointing fingers and laying blame as he chased the whistle in his early days, and perhaps regrets some of the overly distant and spiritual language he used in his gospel albums. at the very least, at 70+, he has realized that despite a lifetime of brilliant poetry and music, he has not come close to finding the source of the calling whistle. His Gospel is no longer bound up in lucid words spoken, but in the profound embrace of real life, even in all its pain and disappointment, even when the whistle still lays out of reach. His God is no longer someone sought after, but someone who is found in seeking after other people. To be faithfully "with" another person "when the deal goes down" is to have faith that he will be with God when the deal goes down. To hold others in love is to hold God in love. To be with others is to be with God, but to chase after God is to never find him.
